What is Otoplasty?

Ears that protrude outward, are asymmetrical or misshapen, or look unnaturally big can affect your self-esteem, especially when during your younger years. Otoplasty, or ear shaping, is a cosmetic procedure that helps to correct the shape, size, and position of the ears to result in a pleasing appearance. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Steckler has assisted countless men, women, and even children to overcome the embarrassment of their ears with this customizable surgery. No matter the deformity, otoplasty at Mississippi Center for Plastic Surgery allows our patients to proudly show their face at any angle with renewed self-assurance. If you or your child are concerned about the shape or size of your ears, contact us to schedule a consultation with Dr. Steckler to find out about your options for ear recontouring surgery.

How Does Otoplasty Work?

Otoplasty is completed using general anesthesia or IV sedation. Most often, the incision is placed around the back portion of the ear or inside the inner ear folds. During surgery, your ear will be manipulated to create a more natural appearance. It's generally common for both ears to be altered during treatment to make sure they appear symmetrical. After the procedure, your incisions are secured with sutures and bandaged so they can remain protected. Once treatment has finished and it is safe to leave, you can finish your recovery at home. Dr. Steckler or a member of his team will give you post-op instructions. It is important that you do not touch or scratch your ears. You should also avoid laying on the ears for a few days. Dr. Steckler will ask to see you back within 3 – 5 days, in which he will remove the wrappings and look at your surgical results. Natural-looking ears are visible right away and the progression of results will continue to improve as the ears heal.
